How We Started
In 2010, we were running a flourishing building company in North Essex, taking on projects ranging from small renovations to large extensions and new build annexes. During these projects, we noticed a growing demand for wood-burning stoves. More and more clients were asking us to install a stove as part of their building work, which sparked into life an interest in this area.
Having grown up in a cold farmhouse in the village of Shalford, I’ve always had a strong connection to wood-burning as a source of warmth. My father would regularly bring home trailers of wood, which we’d split and stack in preparation for the harsh winter months. This experience laid the groundwork for my passion for wood-burning stoves.
Getting Qualified
Motivated by this interest, I decided to pursue the necessary qualifications to install wood-burning stoves. After completing the required exams and courses, I set out to learn everything I could about the industry—what made a good stove, and what didn’t. We initially offered stove installations alongside our building services, but it quickly became clear that there was a significant gap in the local market for the supply and installation of wood-burning stoves.
Stoves Take Over
As demand grew, the focus of our business shifted entirely to wood-burning stoves. I downsized the building company, keeping only one employee—Darren, who remains with us to this day. For several years, we operated out of my garden shed, but in 2021, we opened our first showroom behind Lowe’s of Thaxted.
Growing & Growing
Within a year, it was clear that we needed more space to accommodate our growing business. In 2022, we moved to a larger premises and created a spacious showroom within a warehouse in Wimbish Green, located between Thaxted and Saffron Walden. We’ve just completed our third expansion of this showroom, constantly adding new products and offering a varied range to meet our customers’ needs.
Sweeping Changes
Recently, we acquired a long-established chimney sweeping company in Cambridge, D & N Chimney Services. I’ve dabbled in chimney sweeping before but had never found the right team—until now. With Derek, who brings 30 years of experience, joining Thaxted Stoves, we can now offer the same reliable service under the name Thaxted Sweeps. Additionally, we’ve brought on board David, a HETAS-registered sweep, to cover the local area.
Coming Soon
Looking ahead, we’re excited about the future, including the possibility of expanding into pellet stove supply and installation—but that’s a story for another day.
Warm regards,
